Career Development Goals - Time To Change?

When you initially define your career development goals they might seem set in stone. You have mapped out your career path and nothing is going to stop you. Then one day something happens, your plans are derailed and suddenly you need to re-evaluate.

Could be any one of a number of things. Could be someone at work has been giving you grief and you just can’t take it any more. Could be sudden closure or redundancy. Could be a realization that your career goals just aren’t achievable within your current company. Let’s hope it’s never something that happens in your family life, but almost anything can throw a spanner in the works.

Hopefully you can begin planning your career change in advance. It never does any harm to have an up to date resumé, even if it just sits on your computer and never goes anywhere. Should the unforeseen happen you don’t have to panic, you can manage change efficiently and get that CV out to relevant recruitment agencies who can help you find work and redefine those career development goals so that you are back on track.

Handling recruitment agencies is something that may have to be done with care. The world wide web is full of them and if you are out of work there’s no problem. However, you may not want your name all over the internet as someone seeking a career change if you don’t want your present employer to be aware of it.

As with most things, having a personal recommendation is best. If you don’t have someone who can recommend a recruitment agency you will have to find your own. Those which have a real-world presence can usually be trusted as they are clearly an established entity. Reputable recruitment companies only get paid by finding work for their clients so if a company has been in business for some time it is reasonable to assume that they know what they are doing!

Certainly you want to beware of those companies online with no “real” address or telephone number. If you can’t even speak to them how can you discuss your career development goals and how they might be able to help you? For some things the internet is invaluable but sometimes the traditional way of dealing with things has many advantages. Likewise beware of recruiters who want a fee. Normally they are paid by the employer.
