Career Development Path - On Hold For Recession?
Whether you are at the start of your career development path, or part way to your goal, the world economic situation has to be a contributory factor in a number of decisions. Or so people will tell you. But why?
Yes, less companies are hiring. Yes there are fewer opportunities. But the chance to progress your career still exists, even if the scope has been reduced for the time being.
The important difference you need to grasp is between the general economic and business climate - which, let’s be honest, isn’t the most positive - and your personal situation. There may be fewer jobs but that should not lessen your drive to get the one that provides you with your next step.
If you are in the unfortunate position of being between jobs at the moment you need to try to hold onto your goals. Nobody can pretend it’s easy but the situation, however unpleasant, is temporary. Depending on your location there may even be opportunities for you to develop your career path in spite of your current position. There are local agencies and educational organizations in many areas where you can get access to evening or part-time courses which might further your qualifications. The very fact that you are doing something more than just scanning the want ads will impress a prospective employer.
Of course you may have to take a temporary step back - or sideways, in order to get the bills paid. Your career development path must be capable of the occasional detour! It doesn’t mean your career took a nose dive off a bridge though. If your temporary diversion is not as progressive as you might like, or not as involving, it might at least give you the chance to re-focus and to plan how you are going to get back on track when the situation improves.
Which it will. Economic conditions, positive or negative, are transitory. A period of growth has to follow a period of recession. If you work through it positively you will be better prepared and better equipped when the time comes to get your career development path back on target.
The person with most control over your career development must be you! Find out how, here: Career Development Path.
